A Legendary Team for a Legendary Vehicle

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has earned a reputation as one of the most capable and legendary off-road vehicles in history. Magna has been building the G-Class for more than 38 years at its contract manufacturing facility in Graz, Austria.

Since the beginning of G-Class production, more than 300,000 of the iconic off-road vehicles have been produced in Graz by a dedicated workforce.

It is made up of people like Herbert Putz, Astrid Krajnz and Johann Masser, who call the G-Class their “heart” and lifetime career. They are three out of 150 employees who are working in the G-Class production for at least 20 years and take pride in their knowledge and skill at making superlative automobiles for the most discerning customers.

Since the beginning of G-Class production, more than 300,000 of the iconic off-road vehicles have been produced in Graz by a dedicated workforce.

For some, producing the G-Class is a family affair.

The 54-year-old Astrid Krajnz, a G-Class team assistant, began her career here as an apprentice. “Almost my whole family was employed at the Graz plant” at one time, she said. They include her parents, grandfathers, a sister, her brother-in-law and an aunt.

She takes pride in what she calls the team’s dedication and “a certain continuity” at the Magna Graz plant.

“I’m very proud to work on a product which has existed for so long and is such an outstanding vehicle,” Krajnz said.

Herbert Putz, 55, a technical assistant in G-Class assembly, has worked alongside his uncle and cousins in the pristine automotive assembly environment at Graz. He also began his career here as an apprentice and has watched as more technology and model variations have been added to the G-Class, as its market reach extends to China and the Middle East.

“It’s a great feeling being part of the G-Class, the best product in the world,” Putz said. “Over the years, I’ve worked on many different G-Class models and I’m always very proud when I see a ‘G wagon’ on the street.”

Johann Masser, 56, began as an apprentice mechanic at the Graz plant and now he is responsible for technical project management for G-Class CKD assembly. It’s not difficult to dedicate nearly four decades to a single vehicle, especially one that “no other car can keep up with,” he said.

“Most of the vehicles that are 30 years old are still being driven,” Johann Masser noted. “That makes the G-Class the best off-road vehicle in the world.”

He adds: “The ‘G’ has a special place in my heart. But what is really special to me is the strong relationship I have with my team. There has always been extraordinary team spirit and cohesion.”
